On a Roll: How CMA’s New Artist of the Year Made It to the Top
“[It’s the] same approach that I’ve had from being a 15-year-old kid passing out mixtapes in Antioch High School to right now, same approach,” DeFord tells the Scene by phone from the road. He’s on his way to show 50 of 55 on the Backroad Baptism Tour, a tour that has seen him sell out amphitheaters and arenas across the country. “Dealing with people the same way. Creating relationships, loving all people, just being who I am all the time.” DeFord’s Nashville roots are as deep as his success is unlikely. The first decade of his career was spent deep in the Tennessee hip-hop underground, during an era when the Nashville industry was dismissive if not openly hostile to hip-hop, homegrown or not. The outside world was not much more receptive to the idea of rap from the country music capital of the world. Jelly Roll Announces His Holiday Toy Drive
As part of Jelly Roll’s ongoing efforts to provide support to the underserved youth of Nashville and the surrounding communities, the country star has pledged to host the largest holiday toy drive effort in Music City’s history. Starting November 1 through December 15, toy bins can be found at eight mega-retailer Walmart’s Nashville-based locations, where collected toys will be donated to the Metro Nashville Police Department’s Christmas Charities and the Nashville Fire Department for distribution this holiday season. Morgan Wallen has added 10 additional stadium shows to his “One Night At A Time World Tour” in 2024, including a stop at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium.
